Madison -- John LaFrance McClung M.D., age 89, passed away on Monday, January 24, 2011, at his home in Madison. He was born in Marion, Michigan on March 23, 1921, the son of Donald and Lutie (LaFrance) McClung. John graduated from Port Huron High School in 1939. He attended Port Huron Junior College and University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor and graduated in 1945. John was united in marriage to Margaret Jeanette Wellman on September 1, 1945. Following his retirement he attended MATC in the culinary arts in 1986-87. John was an active member of Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ, Elderhostel, Golden Kiwanis and the Civil War Round Table. He loved reading, raising orchids, the culinary arts and camping with his family. John volunteered at Sequoya Branch Library, Alicia Ashman Branch Library and mentored middle school children in reading and math.
John interned at Wayne County Hospital and then did his anesthesiology residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. In 1953 he began an anesthesiology practice in Madison. John served in the U.S. Navy from 1954-1956 at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital. He continued his medical practice at Madison General (Meriter Hospital) and St. Mary's Hospitals until his retirement in 1986. John served as chairman of the Meriter Hospital Honorary Medical Staff. John continued to be a member in good standing in the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Medical Association.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years Margaret Wellman McClung; children, Jeanette (Greg) Alff, Donald (Anne Harvell) McClung, Mark (Suzanne Clark) McClung, Daniel (Tracie) McClung; grandchildren, Shana (John) Seeyle, Lynette (Justin) Dow and Bryce McClung; great grandchildren, Maximilian ""Max"" and Franklynn Jeanette ""Frankie"" Seeyle, sister-in-law, Polly Samuelson; niece and nephew; and Valur & Gudrun our extended Icelandic family. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Jeanette McClung Blunt and a nephew, Bruce Blunt.
Renaissance man, consummate host, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
A memorial service will be held at ORCHARD RIDGE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 1501 Gilbert Rd., Madison, on Saturday, January 29, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Winton Boyd officiating. A visitation will be held at church on Saturday, from 12:00 noon until the time of service.
