Stoughton- John R. Slater, age 81, passed away due to a stroke on Friday, November 16, 2012. He was born on April 15, 1931 the son of Rex and Celia (Swenson) Slater. On June 13, 1953, John married Doris Rice. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served two years. John worked at Stoughton Lumber for 35 years until his retirement. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Doris; three children, Judy Neath, Jane (Michael) Stobbe and David (Evon) Slater; three grandchildren, Kevin (Deborah Nelson) and Brian (Megan) Slater and Michael Stobbe Jr.; two great grandchildren, Madeline and Brayden Slater; four siblings, Bernie (Kathy), LeRoy, Patricia (Archie) Christensen and June Farr; sister-in-law, Joan; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph; and sister, Ellen Hurtado. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 23, 2012 at Cress Funeral Home in Stoughton followed by full Military honors. Friends and relatives are invited to a luncheon immediately following at the Stoughton American Legion Post 59. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until the time of services Friday.
