Joseph Edward Meagher Jr.

December 12, 1929 — September 7, 2023

Madison, WI

Joe’s long and rich life ended early on September 7, 2023, at the age of 93. During his final days he was surrounded by his sons and the caring staff of the William Middleton VA Hospital Hospice. Joe was born on December 12, 1929, to Joseph and Ellen Meagher and welcomed by his four older sisters. He grew up in Madison during the depression and World War II (his hero was the boxer, Joe Louis!). Blessed Sacrament School, Edgewood High School, and the UW formed his education. It was in Madison that he met a pretty nursing student from Amherst, WI, Delores Rekoske. Having been drafted into the Army, Joe and Delores followed their hearts and quickly got married, starting their journey of 65 years together. After her passing in 2017, not a day went by when Joe didn’t express missing her dearly.

When his service ended Joe completed his education and joined the business founded by his father, Forbes-Meagher Music, Inc. which he managed with his brother-in-law. He eventually rose to the role of president and oversaw multiple expansions. Joe was passionate about his family, the city of Madison, and serving the community. He was the co-coordinator for the first WHA Public Television Auction, worked with Make a Wish Foundation, was a volunteer with the Chazen Art Museum, Madison Symphony, and served on several local boards. He was an active member of Nakoma CC and later Blackhawk CC. Joe was an avid runner and loved to play competitive tennis.

Joe and Delores travelled the world with family and friends. Their travels took them to concerts (Delores loved country, Joe leaned toward classical), film festivals, ski resorts, and many exotic corners of the globe. Joe’s wit and humor were infectious, and he felt it important to always say something positive to everyone he met, and he left the world a better place for it.

He is survived by his sons Gary (Jackie), Casey (Sophol), Chris, and Peter (Amanda Keruze); grandchildren Megan (Brad) Hartman, Kevin Meagher, Kathleen Meagher, Cordillia York, and Marija Keruze, great granddaughters Liv and Annie Hartman, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Joe was preceded in death by Delores, his parents, and sisters Mary Krupinski (Chester), Louise Frye (Harold), Patricia Eiger (Richard), and Jean Meagher.

In accordance with his wishes, the family will hold a private ceremony and celebration of life.
