WAUNAKEE-Joseph "Joe" Meier, age 78, succumbed to a short battle with pancreatic cancer on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Agrace Hospice Care in Fitchburg. He was born in Madison on Sept. 19, 1938, to Leo and Rose (Wagner) Meier. Joe grew up on the family farm in Ashton before moving to Waunakee. He married Sue Boehnen on June 16, 1962, in Cross Plains. He worked for Fish Building Supply/ UBC in Middleton for over 50 years as a yard supervisor and retired in 2004. Joe always enjoyed having the focus of a job to do. Therefore, soon after retirement from Fish you could find him helping his son with facilities maintenance at the local Culver's restaurants.
As a young man, Joe played home talent baseball for Ashton. As life's responsibilities pulled him away from his playing days, his passion for baseball was satisfied by cheering on the Brewers. Joe was always confident this will be their year! He also loved going fishing with his buddies, playing cards with friends, and mixing up a good Brandy Old Fashioned. He cherished the time he spent with his family and especially his 7 granddaughters.
Joe was a devoted Christian belonging to St. John's Catholic Church; he made it a priority to never miss weekly mass.
Survivors include his wife, Sue; three sons, Dennis (Heidi), Dean (Johanna), and Doug (Laura); 7 granddaughters, Ryleigh (Seth), Alyssa, Kaitlyn, Zoe, Nicole, Phoebe, and Claire; two sisters, Fidelis Endres and Charlotte (Joe) Dorn; a brother, Father Laverne Meier; and a sister-in-law, Carrie Meier. He was preceded in death by his brother, Cyril (Margaret); brother, Leonard; and his sister, Marilyn Acker.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St John's Catholic Church, 209 South St., Waunakee. Monseigneur James Gunn will officiate. Friends may call at the Winn Cress Funeral Home in Waunakee from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2017. Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family would like to thank Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg for the care given to Joe especially Felicia and Jodi.
