Joyce Soukup

MADISON- After a long and courageous battle with brain cancer, Joyce Soukup, age 60, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on May 1, 2013.
She was born on August 21, 1952 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of the late Wallace and Jeanne Macdonald. Joyce met her husband Dick Soukup while attending Butler University. They were married on April 2, 1977. Together they had two wonderful children Todd and Laura. Joyce is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Dick; their two children, Todd Soukup and Laura Soukup, both of Chicago, Illinois. Joyce is also survived by her sister Laurie (Peter) Johnson of Indianapolis, Indiana and her brother Bob (Elaine) Macdonald of Lancaster, California.
Joyce attended Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana, for two years where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. She then transferred to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, graduating in 1974 with a degree in Education. Joyce's passion was teaching and her love of children. She began her teaching career in Waupun, Wisconsin, where she taught first and second grade. After moving to Madison with her husband, she taught kindergarten for over 20 years. She spent the majority of her teaching career at Elvehjem Elementary School and then a number of years at Chavez and Crestwood Elementary Schools respectively. Her children also attended Crestwood. Her hobbies were many. Besides shopping, she loved playing the piano (good enough that her husband could actually enjoy her playing), reading books, and crafting, especially making custom greeting cards. Her favorite sport was Indy car racing. She had been fortunate to attend the Indianapolis 500 over forty (40) times. She also enjoyed watching the last quarter of football games and the final holes of a golf tournament. Joyce will be dearly missed by her family and her many friends.
Funeral services will be held at the MIDVALE COMMUNITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4329 Tokay Blvd, Madison 53711 on Monday May 6th at 5:00pm with Rev. Katie Baardseth officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00pm until time of the service.
