Lake Mills- Joyce l. Sunderland, age 73, passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at her home in Lake Mills. She was born in Phoenix, Arizona on July 2, 1938, the daughter of Cyrus and Maudie (Travis) Ruhl. Joyce lived in Turlock, California for 26 years, and then in Hayward for 23 years, where she was a candy maker at Windmill Square. She has lived in Lake Mills since 1997, and worked at Highland Memory Gardens for several years before retiring. Joyce was a member of Deerfield Lutheran Church. She enjoyed yard sales and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Joyce was extremely proud of being the matriarch of a five generation family. She is survived by her daughter, Judy (Bill) Espersen of Waterloo; son, DeWayne (Lisa) Gideon of Plymouth; 5 grandchildren, Renee (Tom) Collins, Amy (Jason) Gee, Dawn (Jeff) Hammersley, Christopher and Jonathon Gideon; 5 great grandchildren, Jeremy (Sam) Espersen, Brittney and Emma Hammersley, Ava Rose and McCager Gee; great great-granddaughter, Josilyn Joyce Espersen; sister, Bertha Alspaugh of Modesto, CA; brother, Lloyd (Goodie) Ruhl of Turlock, CA; and many relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Cleo Hess and Ruth McCormick. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 11:00am at Deerfield Lutheran Church, 206 S. Main St., Deerfield, with the Rev. Larry Sexe officiating. Interment will follow at the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will greet friends at the Cress Funeral Home in Deerfield on Tuesday, December 13th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, and again at church on Wednesday from 10:00 am, until the time of service.
