Judith “Judi” Leah K-Turkel passed away on Feb. 7, 2024, at Our House Assisted Care in Cambridge, WI. She had just celebrated her 90th birthday with family on Jan. 3rd, eating cake and ice cream in grand fashion.

Judi was a long-time resident of Madison, WI, with her husband, Franklynn Peterson. They shared five children, Joseph Kesselman of Arlington, MA; Jeffrey (Shelley) Kesselman of West Lafayette, IN; Alicia (Tom) Peterson of Stony Brook, NY; David (Sarah) Peterson of Omaha, NE; and Kevin (Barb) Peterson of Belleville, WI. Frank and Judi have six grandchildren, Kasi (Andrew) Frymark, Allison (Clayton) Stoffel, Ellie, Joshua, Ruth, and Nichol Peterson. They also were blessed with four great-grandchildren, Emmy, Sabrina, and Gabriel Frymark, and Finley Mae Stoffel.

Judi was born and grew up in Brooklyn, NY, and enjoyed talking about her many adventures. She was very proud of her Jewish heritage. In 1977, she and Frank moved to Madison, and loved their home and neighborhood on Gregory Street. They belonged to Beth Israel Center, and built treasured friendships and memories with members.

Judi wrote and published numerous books with Frank, and she worked as an editor, journalism instructor, and freelance writer, often writing for magazines. She was an avid reader, having a home library that knew no end. Judi was a talented concert-quality pianist. She also was an admirer of art, and with Frank, built a cherished collection of paintings and prints.

Judi and Frank loved to travel. The family has fond stories of driving ‘out west’ in the family van. The couple visited many countries and traveled within the U.S. extensively.

They had a special relationship and treasured spending time together. Whether they were relaxing on their back porch, attending plays or concerts, taking walks, or playing bridge, they were most often seen side by side.

Judi loved to brag about her children and grandchildren, and she was delighted by their accomplishments in school, careers, sports, and art.

The family is grateful to the staff at Jewish Social Services of Madison and Bristol Hospice, who supported Judi with care and skills during her last years, as well as the staff at Our House Assisted Care and Oak Park Place.

A Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 23, 2024 at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, WI 53705.  Judi will be brought to her final place of rest at Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison immediately following services.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Jewish Social Services of Madison or Beth Israel Center of Madison.
