MADISON - Kathleen R Schiro, age 86, passed away peacefully on Friday May 17th at the Aster Retirement Community in Cottage Grove after a brief illness.
Kathleen was born on Nov. 23rd, 1926 in Madison, WI, the daughter of Raymond and Elizabeth Hogan. She graduated from Oregon High School in 1944. While driving in the Madison Area one day, she was pulled over by a young and handsome Police Officer by the name of Dominic Schiro. He was quite taken with the lovely woman behind the wheel and they married on Feb. 23rd 1952. They enjoyed a lasting marriage of 49 years.
Kathleen had a lengthy career while working for the Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations for the State of Wisconsin until her retirement in 1992. Upon her retirement, she took up many hobbies but her most pleasurable had to be Golf. If ever you were to meet this spunky lady for the first time she would be sure to tell you "Schiro's my name and Golf is my game". Kathleen was a member of the Elk's Ladies Auxiliary and made many wonderful and lasting friendships there. Kathleen enjoyed life to its fullest, regrettably her sense of humor, her smile and her companionship will forever be missed by those who knew her and loved her.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband Dominic, her parents, sisters Betty McCarten, Patty Ploc and Lucille Wegger.
She is survived by her sister Margie Lewis of LaJolla, California, her two children Steve Schiro (Jane) of Pewaukee, WI, daughter Jackie Schmidt (George) of Madison, WI and her grandchildren Jenny Schulaner (Ryan), Jessica Soss(Chad), Jamie Schiro, Erik Schmidt and Michael Schmidt. She is also survived by 3 great grandchildren, Alyssa and Landon Schulander and Emma Soss.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St. Monona, WI at 11:30 am on Tuesday May 28th. A Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 am until the time of the service with a light lunch to follow. Memorials can be made to either JDRF (finding a cure for Type I Diabetes), the MS Society or the Alzheimer's Society.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the following: Dr. Kostelyna for his care and concern these many years, the wonderful Nursing staff and Hospitalist of St. Mary's Hospital for their superb care and compassion during her brief stay and finally the wonderful staff at the Aster Retirement Community and Agrace Hospice for their brief but immeasurable watchfulness, concern and dedication at such a difficult time.
"I am not sure exactly what heaven will be like, but I know that when we die and it comes time for God to judge us, he will not ask, 'How many good things have you done in your life?' rather he will ask, 'How much love did you put into what you did?"
