Kenton Edward Holm

Kenton Holm   Kenton ""Coach"" Holm of Madison passed away at University Hospital on Sunday, May 10, 2009. Kenton was born in Mason, Wisconsin on May 11, 1929, the youngest child of Ben and Edna Holm.   He attended grade school in Mason and graduated from Drummond High School in 1947.   He then trained as a telegraph operator and was employed by the "" Omaha"" railroad in Northern Wisconsin until his entry into the Army in 1952, where he served as a radio operator, primarily in Okinawa until 1954. After completion of his Army service, he attended Superior State Teachers College (now UW Superior) full time while also being employed full time as a night telegraph operator for the "" Omaha"" railroad in Superior.   He received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958 with a major in History and a minor in Political Science and Physical Education. Upon graduation from Superior State Teachers College, he accepted a position as a social studies teacher and football and basketball coach at Bark River-Harris Michigan High School, a position he held until being named High School Principal, and later Superintendant of Schools at Bark River-Harris.   While teaching and coaching at Bark River-Harris, he earned a Master of Arts degree in School Administration from what is now Northern Michigan University. In 1964, Kenton was named School District Administrator at Washburn, Wisconsin, a position he held until joining the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction in 1966.   He retired from the Department of Public Instruction in 1991. Kenton is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marilyn; and son David (Evelyn) of Falls Church, Virginia; and daughter Tricia of Madison; as well as grandchildren Anne, Sarah and Ben Holm of Falls Church, Virginia; and Lizabeth and Kyle Bortz of Madison.   He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Daisy (Carl) Johnson and Medora; and two brothers, Hallard and Eldon. Private family services will be held. The family requests memorials be made to the Meriter Home Care Agency, 2180 W. Beltline Hwy. P.O. Box 259993, Madison, WI 53725 or to the American Family Children's Hospital, 1675 Highland Avenue Room 1428, Madison, WI 53792-4165.
