MADISON - L. Nadine Butler, age 98 died Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at Oakwood Village West. She was born April 30, 1913, the second of three children born to Henry L. and Blanche (Galloway) Butler of Poynette. Nadine attended Poynette schools, graduating in 1930, after which she held several Depression Era positions until 1935 when she came to Madison and enrolled in Groves School for Secretaries, which was then on State Street.
In 1936, she took a position at First Congregational Church on University Avenue as Parish and Financial Secretary. That position continued until her retirement in 1976. She was a member of the church, its Women's Fellowship, Martha's Group, and for a decade, Church Historian.
During her retirement she added to the travels here and abroad which she had enjoyed with her sister Genevieve and others, and continued the part time study of subjects of special interest at the University. She continued her work in genealogy and free-lance writing and was a member of the Poynette Area Historical Society, the Madison Civics Club and a birthday club which continued for more than fifty years.
Nadine often expressed her gratefulness for the loving family into which she was born, for her good health, friends, and the many opportunities that had come her way.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Genevieve and Kathleen Butler. Nadine is survived by her dear friends, Virginia and Carl Hilgenberg of Poynette; and her "church family". Nadine was admired for her wonderful work for First Congregational. She held a special place in the hearts of members.
Graveside services for Nadine will be private. A memorial service will be planned for a later date. Memorials in Nadine's name may be gifted to the charity of one's choice.
