Larry Bundy

LARRY BUNDY, age 69, passed away on Monday, July 8, 2013 at Agrace Hospice Care.

Larry was born on December 21st, 1943, in Red Bud, Illinois, the son of Lacy and Martha (Asselmeier) Bundy. He was raised on a grain and livestock farm in southern Illinois (Monroe County) where he attended public elementary and secondary schools. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Illinois, served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971 and received a Ph.D. degree in soil chemistry from Iowa State University in 1973.

Larry dedicated his career to improving economic returns for Wisconsin farmers and minimizing environmental impacts through nutrient management. From 1973 to 1982, Larry worked in industry as a soil scientist for Libby, McNeill & Libby and Nestle Enterprises, Inc.
He joined the Soil Science faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1982, where he was a Professor and Extension Soil Scientist for 25 years until retirement in 2007. Larry conducted research and educational programs on understanding and managing soil and fertilizer nutrients in crop production while minimizing nutrient losses to the environment. He authored over 80 research publications and over 250 Extension articles. He also served as a major professor for three Ph.D and 13 Master's degree students in Soil Science. Larry was a fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and the Soil Science Society of America, as well as a Wisconsin Certified Soil Scientist.

In retirement, Larry enjoyed fishing, gardening, and reading mystery novels. He also continued to write for scientific journals. Larry and wife Susan enjoyed travelling, spending time with children and grandchildren, attending Badger basketball games, and attending concerts including the Madison symphony.

In addition to Susan, his wife of 46 years, survivors include his son Christopher (Heather) Bundy and their son Julian and his son Jonathan (Maria) Bundy and their children Tyler and Elliana.

A celebration of Larry's life will be held at Cress Funeral Home at 6021 University Avenue in Madison July 26 from 1-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Larry Bundy Graduate Student Fund through the UW Foundation at 1848 University Ave., Madison, WI 53726 or Agrace Hospice Care at 5395 E.
