Larry Mellum

July 5, 1939 — March 22, 2020

Larry H. Mellum, age 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at the William S. Middleton Veterans Hospice Center with his son and daughter by his side.  Larry was born on July 5, 1939 in Dodgeville, WI to Harland and Ione Mellum (Olson).

Larry attended McFarland grade schools through 8th grade where he enjoyed playing basketball.  He then graduated from Madison East High School, Class of 1958.

Larry went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force in 1959 and received an honorable discharge in 1963.  He hoped to one day return to Puerto Rico where he was stationed.

Larry was married to Betty Schkirkie for 29 wonderful years.  He was an amazing father and grandfather.  He spent many years as a machine operator for Boumatic Dairy Equipment, eventually retiring from there.

Larry enjoyed the outdoors, camping, deer and squirrel hunting.  He also bowled for many years on leagues at various bowling alleys.  An avid sports fan, Larry looked forward to watching Badger, Packer, and Brewers baseball games on TV.  In addition, Larry would always make time for a good card game with friends.

Larry is survived by his children Scott Mellum and Chris Kussow (Charlie); grandchildren Kalee and Kyle Kussow; former wife Betty Mellum; sister Linda Duryee; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Harland and Ione Mellum and brother Ivan (Arlette) Mellum.

The family would like to express their thanks to the William S. Middleton Veterans Hospice Center for their wonderful care in Larry’s final days along with his beautiful, final military salute through the halls.

The family would also like to give special recognition to Dorothy Cox who was Larry’s amazing friend, coffee buddy, and partner-in-crime for their monthly Ho-Chunk excursions.  Dad appreciated everything you did for and with him.

A celebration of life is currently pending.
