Prairie du Sac: Lawrence William "Larry" Alt, age 68, passed away at his home on Sunday, April 23, 2017. He was born November 24, 1948 the son of William and Margaret (Wiegel) Alt in Cuba City. Larry married Gloria (Drury) Mata July 7, 1989 in Waukesha. Larry grew up in Cuba City, attending St Rose Catholic School, and graduated from Cuba City High School. He was a 1970 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Platteville. He began his career with the Social Security Administration in July of 1970. He had a long and successful career with Social Security working in several offices in Illinois and Wisconsin. He retired on disability in 2004. At that time he held the position of District Manager in the Madison office. Both in his professions and in his personal life, Larry worked hard for racial and gender equality, and also advocated in support of those with mental illnesses.

Larry was an avid Badger fan. He was also known for planning and executing beautiful garden designs. Larry loved spending time with family and was an exceptionally funny, generous, and caring dad, grandpa, brother, cousin, and friend. Larry fought a valiant battle with Parkinson's disease for 21 years.

Larry is survived by his wife Gloria, daughters Meredith Alt and Gisela Alt, children of his first marriage to the late Sue Robison-Matheson, stepdaughter Andrea (Mark) Frey; grandchildren Amanda, Alex and Jacob Meyers, and step grandchildren Devon and Taylor Frey. He is further survived by his brother, Dennis (Nancy) Alt, sisters Joann (Gary) Brewer, Virginia Udelhoven, and Kathy Welhouse. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, William and Margaret Alt, and brother, Steve Alt.

A visitation will be held from 2:30 pm until 3:30 pm on Sunday May 7, 2017 at ST. DUNSTAN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 6205 University Ave., Madison, WI 53705. A memorial service will follow at 3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers the family asks for contributions to the UW Platteville Foundation, www.uwplatt.edu/foundation , or Home Health United, 4639 Hammersley Rd. Madison, WI 53711, or www.HomeHealthUnited.org .

The family would like to thank Dr. John McAuliffe and the staff at Prairie Clinic; Dr. Laura Buyan-Dent, Nancy Ninman, and the staff at the UW Hospital Movement Disorders Clinic; staff at Brightstar of Baraboo; and the many wonderful people at Home Health United Palliative Care and Hospice Services for their expertise and compassionate care. Gloria wishes to express special love and gratitude to Larry's daughters, and special friend Mary K. for their dedication to helping Larry get out to enjoy life for as long as possible.
