Lee A. Heggelund, age 63 of Stoughton, passed away at home on Saturday, September 4, 2010. Â He was born on October 22, 1946 in Wisconsin Rapids, son of Lawrence and Elaine (Thedens) Heggelund. Â Lee graduated valedictorian from high school in Port Edwards in 1965 and received a degree from Northwestern University in education, majoring in chemistry in 1969. Lee married Paula McTavish at Luther Memorial Church in Madison on August 22, 1970 and they raised two sons together. Â Lee taught 8th grade science in Verona for 38 years and influenced the lives of many students. Â He was awarded the Roland and Ruth Rockwell Award as a Distinguished Teacher of Teachers after retiring in 2007, of which he was very proud. Â Lee was a teacher in the classroom and out, and enjoyed his job thoroughly. Â Lee had many interests and hobbies. Â He curled at the Madison Curling Club and introduced many friends to the sport. Â He loved nature and fostered a love of the outdoors in both sons. Â History, gardening, sports, music of all kinds, and reading were favorite pastimes. Â Most of all, he enjoyed getting together with family and friends, enjoying a good meal, taking day trips, or discussing common topics of interest. Â He is survived by his wife, Paula; 2 sons, Neil (Gina) and Eric; 2 grandchildren, Leah and Owen; a sister, Linda (Bob) Roth; a niece, Courtney, and nephews Kyle, Chris and Kevin; 2 sisters-in-law, Cheryl (Tom) Koller and Susan Brohaugh; a brother-in-law, Mike McTavish; and many other aunts, uncles and cousins. Â He was preceded in death by his parents, and his father and mother-in-law, Clarence and Janet McTavish. Â Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at noon at First Lutheran Church, 310 E. Washington, Stoughton, with the Rev. Richard Halom officiating. Â The family will greet friends on Tuesday the 7th from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the Olson-Holzhuter-Cress Funeral Home in Stoughton, and again at church on Wednesday from 11:00 am until the time of service. Â The family would like to thank HospiceCare, Inc. for their kind and loving support. Â We would also like to thank the doctors at Dean and UW Hospital who helped Lee through the last years. Â In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare or the UW Comprehensive Cancer Center.
