Waunakee - Leon R. Horsted, age 89 died April 29, 2011 at home. He was born August 31, 1921 in Lake Norden, South Dakota, the son of Marce and Ethel (Marsh) Horsted. Leon was united in marriage to Esther Olson at Starbuck, Minnesota. He was a graduate of Central High School, Madison, Wisconsin and attended Bard College in New York while in the military. During World War II, he served in the European theatre in The Infantry of the United States Army. He was employed by the Wisconsin Bell Telephone Company for 41 years. Upon retirement he enjoyed collecting and restoring license plates, repairing tube radios, journalism, wood working, organic gardening and was active in the Wisconsin Natural Food Associates. He is survived by his wife; daughters, Sharon (Sam Stassi) Friedland, Linda (Donald) Noble, Sandra (Joel) Zander; five grandchildren, Kim Friedland, Jeremy (Kirshton) Crary, Nicholas (Megan) Crary, Anna and Zoe Zander; sisters, Lola Welke, Delila (Gary) Stolen; brothers, DuWayne (Cordella) Cook and Donald (Bernadine) Cook; sister-in-law, Agnes (Clarence) Vogel; six great-grandchildren, Alex, Ava, Mason, Samantha, Jakson and Ella Crary. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Frank Cook; brothers, LeRoy and Marlin Cook; and brother-in-law, Joseph Welke. A memorial service will be held at the Winn-Cress Funeral Home, 5785 Hwy Q, Waunakee, Wisconsin on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Family will greet friends at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be at the Union Cemetery Association of Vienna. The family appreciates the care given him by Dr. Dale Fanny of Lodi and Dr. Trent Thompson of Waunakee; as well as the Good Samaritan Society of Lodi, Home Health United Hospice and Bright Star.
