Leroy Jacob Hoekman, age 78, passed away Monday, January 23, 2017 at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison. Leroy was born Oct. 12, 1938 in Oskaloosa, Iowa the son of Joe and Anne (Helmhout) Hoekman. He graduated from Clinton High School and earned a Bachelor's in Science degree in math from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

He married Penelope Ann Johnson on April 24, 1970 and they lived on a hobby farm near Milton, WI until his retirement in 1990 after working 30 years at General Motors in Janesville. After retirement, he derived great pleasure in living along Lake Wisconsin in Lodi. In 2003, he moved to Sun Prairie. Leroy had been an active member of Hope Lutheran Church in Milton, WI and Dekorra Lutheran Church in Poynette, WI. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sun Prairie. Leroy was an avid reader and he also enjoyed cross-word puzzles, playing cards, gardening, classic cars, fishing, and showing dogs.

Leroy is survived by his daughter Kathleen (Nathan) Nybroten of Eau Claire, stepdaughter Marsha (Urum) Urumoglu of Verona, stepson Alan(fiancée Cheryl Fabisch) Mundt of Beaver Dam, grandchildren Melissa, Nick, Heather, Crystal, and Jenna and great-grandchildren Cecilia, Zelie, Gemma and Jorge, his sister Ida (Donald) Johnson of Rockford, IL, former wife Nancy Engel, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Leroy is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Penny in 1999, his in-laws Harold and Jean Johnson, seven brothers and five sisters and their spouses, brother-in-law Bob Freeman, sister-in-law Mary Johnson, and 8 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Cress Funeral Home 1310 Emerald Terrace in Sun Prairie on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 11:30 am. with Rev. Timothy Hansen officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00am until time of service. Private burial will be at Dekorra Lutheran Norwegian Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Sun Prairie Public Library.
