McFarland - Leslie 'Les' Johnson, age 71, passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at HospiceCare in Fitchburg. He was born in Portage on June 26, 1940, a son of Margaret Calkins Johnson. Les graduated from Sun Prairie High School in 1959. He served his country in the Army in Viet Nam as a Paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division, and as a Drill Instructor at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. He was united in marriage to Ann Herrmann on June 26, 1970. Les retired from CUNA and later worked for The Village of McFarland. He loved golf and all kinds of sports. He was an avid Packers, Badgers, Brewers and NASCAR fan. Les loved people and was the life of the party. He was Past Commander of the American Legion Post #534 and remained a very active member. Les was also very active in his community. Most important of all was his family, and especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth (Norman) Hallman and John (Paula) Bloyer; grandchildren, Eric and Carly Hallman and Clayton and Hunter Bloyer; sister, Judy (Jim) Lehnherr; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; and a brother, Malcolm 'Corky' Calkins. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at noon at the Cress Funeral Home in McFarland. Burial will follow at Ideal Cemetery in Fennimore. A celebration of Les' life and dinner reception following burial in Fennimore will be held at the McFarland American Legion Hall beginning at approximately 5pm. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 31st from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Special thanks to NSICU at St. Mary's Hospital and to HospiceCare, Inc.
