Leslie “Hook” Scheuren, age 84, passed away on May 27, 2024, unexpectedly of natural causes. He was born in Escanaba, MI to Howard and Evelyn (Way) Scheuren in the hot summer months of 1939. Leslie grew up on the family farm in Cornell, MI until he moved to Wisconsin to raise his 3 children and fostering over 50 more children, before returning to the UP where he called home.
Though Les had one arm, he faced the obstacles that prevented him from following his dream of becoming a truck driver, and in the 80’s he overcame those obstacles. He traveled from coast to coast hauling goods, oftentimes accompanied by one of his children during the summer months. While in retirement, he continued his dream of traveling and visited the Gulf Shores area during the winter months, escaping the cold winters and snow the Upper Peninsula is known for.
Les was known for his phrase “mornin” regardless of the time of day. Usually addressed as Hook, but to his siblings and cousins he was known as Bill. His sense of humor and spunk will be remembered most of all by his family and friends. No more fast pegging, tangled fishing line, or over-expressive singalongs. I’m sure he’d be saying to all of us, “bye for now” if he had the chance.
Survivors include his children Sally (Eric) Hendricks of Gwinn, MI, Steven (Raymond Kolk) Scheuren of Streamwood, IL, Suzette (Tim) Harrison of Marshall, WI and bonus-son Christian “Red” Smithrud of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Megan “Sam” (Jesse) Ogea of Ishpeming, MI, Michael (Stephanie Hudson) Crawford of Escanaba, MI, Marcus (Lizzy) Crawford of Escanaba, MI, Steven (Lauren) Harrison of Oklahoma City, OK, Noah Harrison of Marshall, WI and Rebekah Harrison of Madison, WI; great grandchildren Evelyn, Kenzie, Reggie, & Charlie Ogea, Liam Crawford and bonus-great-grandchild Charlie St. Cyr; siblings Rodney “Fritz” Scheuren, Danny (Mary) Scheuren, and Debbie (Edward) Gregson; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Les was preceded in death by his life partner June Ackroyd, previous wife Charlotte Scheuren, sister-in-law Dawn Scheuren, brother Leonard Scheuren, sister-in-law Doris Scheuren, and his parents.
A celebration of Leslie’s life is planned for July 13th from 2-5 at the Wells Township Hall located at 38295 County 426 M.5 Rd, Arnold, MI 49819. Family and Friends are welcomed to come and share stories as we remember Les and how he impacted each of us.
