Madison - Lewis Toppel, age 65, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 2, 2009 at HospiceCare in Fitchburg, WI. Lewis was born in Portsmouth,VA on January 13, 1944 to Lilian (nee Signer) and the late Morris Toppel. He is survived by children Leah, Dana (Denice), and Benjamin (Rainbow); grandchildren Morris and Willa; sister Gail Sherman (Mark); nieces Jessica and Elizabeth and nephews Neil and Michael. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret (nee Rasmussen) and brother Edward. Raised in Chicago, IL, he attended Roosevelt High School. After graduating from the University of Illinois Chicago Circle, Lewis taught at Cabrini Green and then served in the U.S. Army. Soon after, he moved to Madison, WI where he made his home for 40 years. A dynamic man of many interests, Lewis has been to the GreatWall, the Wailing Wall and up against the wall, as he would say. He made many friends on State Street dating back to his days as shop owner of Bigsby and Kruthers. He has worn many hats, including real estate investor, Chinese vinegar importer, dairy cow exporter, and stock trader. Lewis was a loving father, dedicated husband and loyal friend. His sense of humor, wit and matchless personality will be greatly missed by all. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the wonderfully caring staff at the UW hospital Neurology Unit and HospiceCare of Fitchburg. Services will be held Sunday, November 8, 11AM at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. Visitation with the family immediately following services.
