Waunakee -- Linda Shanks Currier, after a brief courageous battle with cancer was called home by our Lord on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital. She was born on March 17, 1957 in Lake Delton to John and Genevieve (Squires) Shanks. Linda spent her early years working with her family running a successful restaurant in Lake Delton along Highway 12. Graduating from Wisconsin Dells high school in 1975 with honors a semester early she finished up the 2nd semester at the University of Wisconsin -- Baraboo. After one year at North Dakota State, Linda transferred to the University of Wisconsin -- Madison, receiving an Interior Design degree in 1980. Linda met and married her husband, John, about this time and took her first design job with the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Madison. Always a hard worker, Linda pursued her dream with diligence and an eye for detail both traits serving her well in her chosen field. The loving couple welcomed two daughters, Lindsay and Jessica in 1983 and 1985 respectively, and formed the perfect family. Together they travelled to Disney World a couple of times, Myrtle Beach, Niagra Falls and Las Vegas with numerous weekend trips around the state. Linda worked for the V.A. Hospital for 13 years and followed that with jobs as an interior designer for Bray Associates Architects Inc. in Madison. There she designed the interiors of several municipal, medical and school buildings. Most recently, Linda worked at Architectural Design Consultants Inc. in her childhood home town of Lake Delton. There she did the interior design of vacation condominiums, hotels, restaurants and water parks. An accomplished professional, Linda had passed her National Council of Interior Design Qualifications exam and obtained her American Society of Interior Designers Professional Status. Above all of these experiences, she was an extremely caring, loving, understanding and dedicated daughter, wife, mother, sister and friend. Linda is survived by her husband and daughters, all of Waunakee; her parents, John and Genevieve Shanks of Lake Delton; and parents-in-law, Fred and Lillian Currier of Madison. Surviving siblings include, a brother, David of Wisconsin Dells, James (Melissa) of Stoughton; sister, Susie (Craig) Richards of Wisconsin Dells; and a brother-in-law, Rick (Laura) of Circle Pines, Minnesota. Surviving aunts and uncles include, Merlin (Eunice) Shanks of Portage, William (Virginia) Shanks of Baraboo, Bud (Joan) Squires of Arlington, and Regina Michaelis of Sun Prairie; and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. on Monday, January 4, 2010 at WINN-CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 5785 Hwy Q, Waunakee. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at OUR REDEEMER LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1701 McKenna Blvd, Madison, officiated by Pastor Robert Knippel. A visitation will also be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at church. Interment will be at the Shanks Family Cemetery in the Township of Caledonia. Memorials can please be made to the American Cancer Society, 8317 Elderberry Road, Madison, WI 53717, so we can attempt to eliminate this terrible disease.
