Lois Brick

On the morning of June 16th, Lois Brick died as she lived, with graciousness and on her own terms.  The evening before, she played cards with her friends. That morning she arose as usual, walked to collect the paper, and made coffee.  She watered and dead-headed her flowers; then she laid down and peacefully passed away.

Lois was a woman of many talents and interests. She was passionate about friendship, women’s rights, childhood education, family, card playing, theater, prairies, tennis, skiing, cycling and travel. She was born on November 17th, 1935 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Margaret and Garfield Dart. She was a proud graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy and maintained contacts with classmates through the end of her life. She attended the UW Madison, where she obtained her BA and MA, and was ABD for her PhD. Her career focused entirely on education, beginning as a classroom teacher and ending as the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Consortium for School Evaluation. She volunteered for many organizations and was a strong supporter and volunteer for Wisconsin Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA). She was a long-time member of the Madison Civics Club.

She married Ed Brick in 1962, and they had just celebrated their sixtieth anniversary. Lois and Ed were tennis partners, theater goers, opera buffs, prairie enthusiasts, cribbage players, travel buddies and best friends. They were especially proud of the prairie restoration they did at their home near Paoli; the annual burn was something they looked forward to and did together with family members. Taking in the last show of the season at American Players Theater was a beloved tradition for Lois and Ed. Multi-generational ski trips to the Colorado Rockies and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are memories that all of us will treasure.

She is survived by her husband Ed and her three children Steve Brick (Linda), Sarah Brick (Joe Shutack) and Sue Reddan (John). Grandchildren include Maggie Brickerman (David), Alex Brick, Emma Lusis (Al), Jack Reddan and Sophia Reddan. Great-grandchildren Mae and Arthur Brickerman round out the clan. All of us who survive her loved her and will miss her.
