Louis Marshall

March 26, 1932 — March 4, 2018

MARSHALL, LOUIS JOHN "LOU" 85, died on Sunday, March 4, 2018, following a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. He passed peacefully, in the company of family members, at his home in Waunakee, WI.

Lou was born in Valley Falls, RI, the son of John Marshall and Christina (Williams) Marshall. He graduated from St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket, RI and Rhode Island College of Education. Lou married Mary (Cavanaugh) Marshall of Coventry, RI in 1956.

Lou began his long career as a teacher and administrator in the Coventry, RI school system in 1953. He taught elementary and high school. Lou was a vice principal at Coventry High School from 1967 until his retirement in 1987. Lou's teaching career was interrupted by military service with the United States Army. He served honorably, assigned to duty in the US and Germany.

In school, Lou played baseball, basketball and soccer. For decades, he was an avid softball player and coach for many teams. He also bowled and golfed. He officiated high school and college sports, most notably baseball and soccer, earning awards at the RI, New England and national level, including multiple hall of fame honors.

Lou was a devoted son and brother, loving husband, and wonderful father and grandfather. He was an educator who cared, team-player and loyal friend. He enjoyed sports competition and the camaraderie that went with it. He was kind and willing to extend a helping hand. When his country called, he answered. He faced adversity with courage and grace. His wit and smile were quick. He said he had no regrets about how he lived his life and slept well because he had a clean conscience. Lou played the game of life with love and after the last play...he is safe at home.

Lou is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Linda and Louis; grandchildren, Shannon and Stephen; and siblings, Catherine, Christina, and Edward.

Lou was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Thomas and John; and brothers, John and Joseph.
