Lyn Benavides

Columbus/Madison - Lyn Frances Fulwider Benavides, age 66, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2015, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison. She was born on August 28, 1948 in Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of Richard and Gloria (Orcutt) Fulwider. Lyn met her future husband, Ronald Gabriel Benavides, at the University of Dallas, Irving, Texas, where they were students. They were married at the UD chapel on July 22nd, 1972.

Lyn was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She held a BA in English from the University of Dallas; a BA in Music from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School. She practiced law in Madison for 23 years, focusing on criminal defense and parental rights. She was an accomplished musician, both in voice and piano. She was a devout Roman Catholic, a long-time member of Cathedral Parish in Madison, where she attended Mass every Sunday, and participated throughout the year in church liturgies and events. Lyn loved gardening, planting and nurturing colorful patterns of flowers and trees, creating spectacular garden beds and paths at home.

Most of all, she was dedicated to her family, giving of herself in her roles of wife, mother and grandmother.

Those who survive her are her husband, Ronald; their nine children, Sara (Miguel) Conner of Chicago, Illinois, Gabriel (Deborah Worthington) Benavides of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Anna Benavides of Chicago, Illinois, Samuel (Lexia Ford) Benavides of Los Angeles, California, Aaron Benavides of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Maria Benavides of Milwaukee, Zachary Benavides of Madison, Abigail Benavides of Long Island, New York, and Adam Benavides of Chicago, Illinois; 10 grandchildren; brothers and sisters, David (Claudia Tovar Robles) Fulwider of Miami, Florida, Mark Fulwider of Sacramento, California, Richard (Melissa Mentzel) Fulwider of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Leslie (Neil) Cohen of Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts; sister-in-law, Deborah Morissette Fulwider, Miami, Florida; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC CHURCH, 404 E. Main St., Madison on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. with Msgr. Kevin Holmes presiding. A visitation will be held at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie, on Friday, May 29, 2015 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of the mass.
