M. Melsean Wittenberg

November 19, 1926 — June 23, 2024

Madion, WI

The family of (Mildred) Melsean Wittenberg is saddened to announce her passing on 23 June 2024. She was our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Melsean is greatly missed by her son, Dr. Wayne (Carol) Wittenberg, daughters Melsean Wittenberg, Laurel (Terry) Hunt; grandchildren Katie (Nic) De La Vega, David Hunt, Barbie and Greer Wittenberg, and Seth (Tracy) Uschuk; and great-grandchildren Reagan and Charlotte De La Vega, and Bailey and Andrew Uschuk.

Melsean was born on 19 November 1926 to the late Colonel Wayne O. and Mildred M. (Hetzler) Hauck. Melsean's father's service in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II brought the family to Madison, WI in 1941; where she graduated from Wisconsin High in 1944. She went to the Univ of Wisconsin-Madison, eventually graduating and completing her internship at the New York Hospital to receive her certification as a Registered Dietitian in early 1950. Her schooling had been interrupted several times due to the War and to follow her father's post-War reconstruction assignments to Bad-Nauheim Germany in 1946.

Returning to Madison, Melsean met the late Layton J. Wittenberg, who became her beloved husband of 59 years. Layton and Melsean moved to Dayton, OH in 1953, where Melsean worked for the City of Dayton, providing nutritional outreach programs for the City residents. Melsean enjoyed her family and travelling with them to Layton's many chemistry and engineering conferences around the US and internationally to Germany and Japan. Melsean also enjoyed the fraternal and charitable work with Masonic organizations, including the Order of the Eastern Star and Nile. Melsean greatly loved and was devoted to her family, and we will keep her in our hearts.
