Marcelaine Hobson Winner

October 7, 1925 — November 21, 2010

Marcelaine Winner died on November 21, 2010 at the age of 85.  She was born on October 7th, 1925 in Rome, Italy, where her parents lived while her father was the American Delegate to the International Institute of Agriculture. She was a long time resident of Madison, having moved here in 1931 when her father became a professor of Agriculture Economics at the University of Wisconsin.  Marcy graduated from Madison West High School in 1943.  She attended the University of Wisconsin and in 1948, was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics.  While at the University, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.   Marcy was married to Attorney John D. Winner in 1949.  They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1999 with a trip to Grand Cayman with all of their children and grandchildren.      From the early 1970's until the 1990's her work at Little Norway became full time.  The museum is now operated by her youngest son, Scott.   Marcy was a long time member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and was a 50 year member of Chapter V of PEO.  During her lifetime Marcy had many fascinating hobbies. In the 1950's she became interested in Rosemaling, a Norwegian folk art.  She taught Rosemaling at MATC and sold her pieces at Little Norway. Photography and creating photo albums for she and John and their children became a passionate interest of Marcy's.  With her dedication she provided a permanent pictorial record of all the important events and activities of the lives of her children and their families.  Traveling with her husband, and also her children and grandchildren, gave her immense pleasure.  A favorite destination was the Caribbean where she loved to snorkel and scuba dive.  Marcy became certified as a diver at age 61, logging well over 150 dives most of which she enjoyed with her family.  Over the years she and John traveled to Norway with all of their children.   Marcy is survived by two of her sons, John (Randy) Randall Winner (Claudia) and Scott Paul Winner (Jennifer), daughter-in-laws Mary Jo Martinelli Winner, and Patricia McQuade Winner, two grandsons, Coleman and Asher, and three granddaughters, Cassandra, Haley, and Carly.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John Dennett Winner, her son Gary Hobson Winner, her father Professor Asher Hobson, and her mother Thea Dahle Hobson, of Madison and Little Norway, and a brother, Merk Hobson of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska.   Marcy was a selfless person, focusing her energy on helping others and creating happiness for all around her.  She will be remembered as a loving wife, a devoted and caring mother, an adoring grandmother, and a very loyal friend. Marcy lived her life graciously, with a quiet dignity, and a wonderful sense of humor.  All who knew her, will miss her dearly.   In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Attic Angle Place, 8301 Old Sauk Rd, Middleton, WI 53562 or Hospice Care, 5395 East Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711.   A Memorial service is pending. An announcement will appear in the paper at a future date. Cress Funeral & Cremation Service is assisting the family.
