Margaret Dumphy

June 7, 1915 — March 17, 2013

Madison - Margaret Dumphy passed away March 17, 2013 at St. Mary's Care Center. She was born June 7, 1915 in Clifton, New Jersey to parents Joseph and Sophie Pavlik. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Dumphy; brothers Andrew Pavlik and John Pavlik; sisters Mary Veleber, Betty Burnham, and Anne Tkacz; and special friend Dudley Howe.
She met David, during World War II while he was stationed in New Jersey with the U.S. Army. They married on June 18, 1944 in Clifton. Shortly after, David was transferred and they moved to San Diego, California. After the war they moved to Madison, where Marge took on a career of more than 30 years with the State of Wisconsin, Department of Industry, Labor, and Human Relations. David passed away in November 1972.
After retirement Marge took much joy from volunteering at local hospitals, nursing homes, and her church. She also enjoyed bowling, classic movies, cards, and puzzles. She did not drive, but traveled the city of Madison extensively by bus and on foot, and was a friendly sight to east- and west-siders alike. There was no one more familiar with the Madison bus routes.
She was a loving mother and grandmother, who would sit for hours teaching her grandchildren how to play cribbage. All of her acquaintances found her to be honest, direct, and goodhearted, always with a smile on her face.
Marge is survived by her children, Jim (Jane) Dumphy, Tom (Jill) Dumphy, and Mary Sams; grandchildren Jessica Dumphy, Emily Oliva, Allison Dumphy, Nathan Sams, Abby Burns, and Casey Sams; seven great-grandchildren, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Lisa Grant, Monsignor Kenneth Fiedler, Rhonda Heise, the staff at St. Mary's Care Center, and to Marge's "second family," her fellow parishioners and staff at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, for their loving care and kindness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 405 S. Owen Drive, Madison, on Friday, March 22, 2013, 12 noon, with Msgr. Kenneth J. Fiedler presiding. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of mass.
Memorials may be made to Our Lady Queen Of Peace School Endowment, St. Mary's Care Center, or the charity of your choice.
