Obituary for ML Jones
This past Sunday, the 15th was the final day in the life of Margaret (Peg) Jones.   Margaret was born in Oklahoma City on January 15th, 1918 to Cora and Earl Jones.   Her 10 brothers and sisters all preceded her in death.   Margaret was remarkable for attending Oklahoma University at the end of the depression and using her intelligence and determination to graduate, in difficult times, with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education.   She taught in Oklahoma and then, along with four of her brothers served in the armed forces in WWII.   She was a WAVE in Hawaii and later in the Caribbean.     Margaret obtained her Masters at Smith College after the war and then her PhD at the University of Wisconsin.   She then taught for the remainder of her career at the University of Illinois in Bloomington. Her long time Companion, Caroline (Carlie) Thompson preceded her several years ago.   They often travelled together and completed a round the world trip in 1964.   For many years they would travel regularly to Alberta, Canada and enjoy the mountains at the Lake O'Hara Lodge.   They shared a unique home designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright just South of Verona.    Margaret retired years ago but would often commute every weekend from Bloomington to Verona to enjoy this comfortable and beautiful home before that retirement.   She would often participate in environmental and land planning forums in Verona and participated in other environmental issues. She admired the work and vision of Aldo Leopold.   In her final years she became increasing afflicted with a mind stealing disease that unfairly robbed us all of her enthusiasm, dignity and love of life.   She will be missed.   Any memorials can be addressed to the Aldo Leopold center in Baraboo Wisconsin.   Funeral services for Margaret will be held Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison.
