Margaret S. ‘Peg’ Jones passed away at home on February 16th after a long illness. Peg was born on January 14, 1946 to Elizabeth and Edwin Sterner in Oak Ridge, Tenn. where her father was working on the Manhattan Project. She was raised during her school years in Indianapolis, Ind. Peg married Bill Jones of Madison in 1970. She attended McAlister College, graduated from Ohio State University with a BS in Education. She then received an MS degree from University of Wisconsin in Educational Psychology and a Doctorate of Education degree from the University of Maryland. She was employed in Howard County Md. for several years and by the Dept. of Defense Dependent Schools (DODDS) as a school psychologist for 17 years during which time she and her family lived in Naples, Italy and Wuerzburg, Germany. During their time overseas Peg and Bill made many lifelong friends and traveled extensively in Europe, Russia, and Egypt. Peg also has visited China. Peg retired from education in 1999 and has since devoted her time to volunteer work and reading.
She and Bill raised three children, Sharron, Tony, and Michael and have been blessed with eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Peg’s volunteer work includes Daughters of the Nile which supports Shriners Children’s Hospitals, First Presbyterian Church of Waunakee where she served as Clerk of Session for six years among other supporting roles, PEO supporting young women’s education, and Attic Angels Association where she served as Chair of the Board and on numerous committees. She also would read weekly to visually impaired residents.
Peg is survived by her husband Bill of Waunakee, daughter Sharron Jones of Colorado Springs, sons Tony Jones of Eugene, OR., and Michael (Andrea) Jones of Mountain View, CA. Grand- children include Kristin Reed; Franchesca, Liam, Megan, and Kieran Jones; Chip, Billy and Bobby Jones. Great- grandchildren include Colt, Jaxson and AJ Jones. She is further survived by her sister Susie (Tom) Hacker of Indianapolis, IN. and brother Edwin (Kathy) Sterner of Seattle, WA. and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church, 5763 Co. Rd. Q, Waunakee. Visitation from 9:30 to 11:00a.m. with service at 11:00. Lunch will follow in the church hall. Inurnment will be at Bethel Cemetery in the town of Calamus, Dodge County at a later date.
