Marian Elizabeth "Betty" Ohnhaus Romig, 95, passed away peacefully with her family at her side in her home, at Cross Plains, on September 10, 2012. Born August 16, 1917, in Madison, Wisconsin, Betty grew up on the east side, graduating from East High School. She received her B.S. in English and her R.N. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She worked at the UW Hospital until she enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving in the Aleutians during WWII. She married Howard Romig MD and raised her 12 children in Alaska and Wisconsin. She was a pioneer; she hunted, she fished and "killed her a bear" in Alaska, and she was a darn good juggler. She was an active member of the Episcopal Church serving wherever she was needed - this included serving on the altar guild, knitting socks, working in the church office, playing the organ at services, and cooking for the homeless. She was also a Scout den mother, a serious bridge player and played the piano in a jazz and symphony orchestra until she was 90. Betty was an avid reader (she was a member of her church's book group until the end), a skillful knitter, and excellent cook, and above all a devoted and extremely well-informed Packer fan who sent tapes of the victories to her grandchildren in Alaska. After retirement, Betty enjoyed traveling, taking numerous tours of Italy where many of the locals knew her by name. Betty was preceded in death by her siblings Virginia Dymond and Gordon Ohnhaus both of Madison, and her sons Joseph and John of Alaska. She is survived by 5 sons and 5 daughters; 30 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 6205 University Avenue, in Madison, Wisconsin, followed by full military honors. The family is extremely grateful for Agrace Hospice and the members of St Dunstan's. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Agrace Hospice or St. Dunstans Episcopal Church. We love you, Mom.
