Gilbert, Marion J
Stoughton - Marion J. Gilbert, age 80, of Stoughton passed away peacefully, at her home on July 7, 2011 with family by her side.
Marion was born in LaCrosse, WI on December 30th, 1930, the daughter of Edward and Elsie (Conley) Dohlin. She grew up in Tomah, WI and graduated from Tomah High School in 1948. Marion married her high school sweetheart, Bob Gilbert, on October 28, 1950 and they were blessed to spend 60 wonderful years together.
Bob and Marion lived in several places before coming to Stoughton. When they were first married they lived in San Antonio, Texas, where Bob was stationed in the Air Force. In 1950, they moved to Milwaukee WI where Bob was the District Sales Manager for Evinrude Motors, and then to Nashville, TN in 1953. In 1961 Bob and Marion moved to Stoughton and purchased Gilbert Motors Car Dealership. Marion was very involved in the business and did all of the accounting. In 1976 they sold Gilbert Motors and Marion continued to use her accounting skills at Tom's IGA in Stoughton.
Marion was musically talented and a gifted pianist, trained by her mentor, Sister Felicia. She taught piano lessons and accompanied many talented students in Stoughton musical competitions. Marion was a charter member of the Stoughton Festival Choir and continued to sing in concerts until this year when ill health hampered her effort. She also sang in the St. Ann Church choir for many years and played the church organ.
Marion was known for her great cooking and truly enjoyed entertaining. She had many hobbies including bridge, euchre, gardening, bowling, and was an avid Packer and Badger fan. She loved to travel and read. She thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the Entre Nous Book Club. Marion had a generous heart and contributed to St Ann Church both with her time and talents. She volunteered at the Stoughton Hospital and specialized in medical records for 30 years. Marion had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed making friends wherever she went.
Marion and Bob were King and Queen of Syttende Mai in 1974. In 1978, they had the honor of representing Stoughton at a formal State Dinner for King Olaf of Norway. Marion and Bob joined the Stoughton Country Club in 1961 where they enjoyed many rounds of golf with friends.
Marion was preceded in death by her son Terry Gilbert and brothers-in-law Wade Gilbert and Jimmy Flannery.
