Westport: Marshall Maurice Kuhnly, 85 died peacefully on Thursday, August 1st, 2013 in the home he built 49 years ago.
He was born on July 29th, 1928 in St Paul, MN to Maurice and Ruby (Carlson) Kuhnly. At age 18 he joined his father in the logging business and moved to Wisconsin.
A year later he began his carpentry career constructing farm buildings in the Spring Green area. Here is where he met his future wife, Ilene Lins. He enlisted in the ERC Engineers Army Reserve during the Korean War, serving from 1950 to 1953. Upon returning from service, he joined the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 314 in Madison and was a member for 60 years. Marsh held several positions in Local 314 beginning as an apprentice carpenter and including roles as Treasurer and Business Manager. He was also the 1st Vice President, and later President of the Wisconsin State Council of Carpenters. He completed his career as a union organizer in Wisconsin and for the state of Illinois.
He and Ilene were married on February 14th, 1953 at St. John's Catholic Church in Spring Green. They spent their first years in Madison where they started their family. They moved to their current home in Westport in 1964.
Marsh was a "Jack of all trades" performing electrical, plumbing, concrete work, and automobile maintenance, etc. Over the years he enjoyed horseback riding, bowling, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, card playing and in later years, trips to casinos. He enjoyed his "home away from home" at the family cabin on Summit Lake where he spent many days with family and friends. Marsh spent hours on the lake in his boat teaching many young people how to water ski.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ilene, children Kevin, Kathy (Mark Roelke), Keith (Jayne); grandchildren Craig Roelke (Sarah), Jessica Roelke, Michael and Rachel Kuhnly, and great-granddaughter, Nora Sand. He was preceded in death by his son Daniel, his parents, and his brother Glen.
