Madison – Mary Ann Schulte, age 88, died peacefully with her family by her side on January 27, 2024.

She was born on the family farm in Cedar County, NE on January 5, 1936 to Julia (Goeden) and Joseph Zavadil. She was the oldest of two children.  Mary Ann graduated from Saint Boniface Grade School in Menominee, NE (1950), Mount Marty High School in Yankton, SD (1954), and Mount Saint Scholastica College in Atchinson, KA. She was taught by Benedictine nuns at all three schools. During college, Mary Ann met the love of her life, Emmett Schulte, whom she married on August 22, 1959, in the same church where she was baptized, received her First Communion, and was confirmed. After the wedding, Mary Ann and Emmett moved to Madison, WI.

Mary Ann had a life full of love and adventures. To support Emmett’s work with USAID, she traveled with their family twice to Nigeria (1964-1967, 1971-1973) and went with Emmett to the Gambia (1991-1992). Two of their children were born in Nigeria and she attended the Papal Mass when Pope John Paul II made a pilgrimage to the Gambia. Mary Ann visited five continents, and she made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 2023.  Mary Ann and Emmett spent five summers (1995-1999) working with the Missionaries of Charity at St. Patrick’s Mission near Gallup, NM and they received a blessing from Mother Teresa.

Mary Ann was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish for more than 55 years. While she was active in numerous ministries, she served the longest as a Eucharistic Minister, a volunteer at Luke House, and a member of the Respect Life Committee. She also had several part-time jobs and supported her husband in the Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. Her greatest joy was being with her family.

Mary Ann is survived by her two daughters - Rose Marie and Eva Marie (Mike Moon); four sons – Benedict (Anna Gitman), Michael (Yolanda Torres), Paul (Tashi Kessler), and John (fiancée Sharonann Madle); ten grandchildren – Elisabeth, Yael, Celia, Kaeleah May, Sampson, Natan, Max, Hazel, Mariah, and Carolann; sister  – Coletta (Stan) Corwin; She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Mary Ann and her family are grateful for all the love and support she received from people at Our Lady Queen of Peace, All Saints, Agrace Hospice, and the various ministries in which she served.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 11:00 AM, preceded by a rosary at the church at 9:45 AM and a visitation at 10:00 AM. Burial at Resurrection Cemetery will immediately follow the Mass, and lunch will be served following the burial at Our Lady Queen of Peace.

Memorials may be made to the Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens, the Catholic Multicultural Center, or Babies and Beyond.
