Monona - Mary K. Clagett, 98 years of age, died at her residence at Heritage Assisted Living, Monona, Wisconsin, on May 20, 2013 following complications from a fall. She was born Mary Alice Kauffman on November 6, 1914 at her family's farm at Kimmerlings in North Lebanon Township, Pennsylvania, to Annie Schaeffer and John Kauffman.
She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Lebanon Valley College and subsequently received her teaching certificate at Millersville State Teachers College.
She married Carl Owen Clagett on November 25, 1938. Following his overseas service in World War II, they lived in Madison, Wisconsin where he completed his doctoral degree in biochemistry. She and Carl lived in Fargo, North Dakota, until 1956 and later in State College, Pennsylvania. After her husband's death in 2002 she moved to Wisconsin to be close to family.
In addition to raising their three children, she taught, substitute taught, and volunteered in elementary schools. She enjoyed cooking for her family and others. She loved music and was a talented pianist and vocalist. She sang in the choir at Plymouth Congregational Church in Fargo, ND, and Faith United Church of Christ in State College, PA.
Mary was a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by daughters Carol Clagett Livingston and Margaret Clagett Dame both of Deerfield, Wisconsin, son, Donald C. Clagett, of Alexandra, Virginia, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A memorial service and interment will take place 11:00 a.m. on August 24, 2013, at St. Jacob's Kimmerlings Church, 1 Saint Jacobs Dr, Lebanon, PA 17046. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to Agrace Hospice Care, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711, or to a favorite charity in her name.
