Mary Ann Lunda, age 92 of Madison, Wisconsin passed away peacefully on October 3rd, 2023. Mary was born to parents Frank and Katherine Statz in Madison, WI on November 5th, 1930 and grew up in Sun Prairie. She attended school at Sacred Heart and graduated from Madison Business College. After working in Manitowoc and Chicago, she took a job at the VA Hospital in Madison where she met her husband, Bob. They were married for 67 years.
She was a loving and committed wife and mother. Mary will be remembered for her strong work ethic and great sense of humor. She gave of herself tirelessly to support Bob’s sales career as well as their six children’s educational, athletic and other pursuits.
She enjoyed tennis, golf, and 3-to-5-day biking adventures to various states with her friends in a local biking group. Mary was an avid reader and interested in continually learning new things. She was an early adopter of the personal computer and spent countless hours surfing the internet and emailing friends and family. For almost 50 years, during Badger football games she loved parking cars and visiting with out-of-town fans. Later in life she developed rheumatoid arthritis and joined the UW Patient Partners Team teaching medical students throughout the country how to diagnose the condition.
Mary and Bob enjoyed both domestic and foreign travel. Some of Mary’s fondest memories were spent with family and friends at their cottage on Lake Wisconsin. She was a devoted member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for many years.
Mary is survived by her sons Mike (Dianne), and Bob (Debbie), daughters Kathy Zehner (Bill), Kay VandeVrede, Karen Lunda, and Kelly Lunda-Sampson (Bob), grandsons Brad Lunda, Braden Zehner (Ashley), Riley Zehner (Julia), and Joel VandeVrede (Breanne), granddaughters Julie Lunda and Marie VandeVrede and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, parents and brother Vincent.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank UW Health providers, Dr. Alexis Eastman and her staff for many years of top-notch medical care, concern and compassion.
A funeral mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Thursday October 12th at 11:00 AM with a visitation before the service starting at 10:00 AM. Friends are invited to join the family for a church luncheon immediately following the mass and then a brief blessing at Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in Mary’s name to Blessed Sacrament School or Blessed Sacrament Church in Madison or The Oakwood Foundation.
