MADISON
Mary Jaye Moss, age 77, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2017 at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 30, 1940 in Monroe, Wisconsin to John J. and Helen (Ruehle) Tschudy. Mary was a trailblazer who was not content to be like everyone else. She graduated from Madison Central High School in 1958, and then received a Nursing degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1962, and her Master's degree in Nursing in 1977. Proud of her 32 years in the nursing field, Mary served as an emergency room head nurse at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force stationed in California, and as a public health nurse for Dane County, WI. She was a faculty member of the UW School of Nursing and an original faculty member of the Nursing Department at Edgewood College, where she helped build and develop the program. Later, she served Edgewood as a faculty representative on the Board of Trustees and on the Board of Visitors.
Other than her nursing career, Mary was most proud of her family, their accomplishments, and love. She enjoyed family dinners, watching badger sports (especially football and basketball), traveling, and spending time at the family cottage on Pleasant Lake. She married Dr. Hubert V. Moss in 1967, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in March with their family. Mary had dear friends in her West Towne Mall walking group, the Knit Wits group of Westminster Church, numerous bridge groups dating back to the 60s, and the wonderful longtime neighbors at Pleasant Lake.
Upon retirement, Mary and Hugh became snowbirds to Sarasota, Florida for many wonderful years. They loved spending time in Florida, where they made cherished friends. Their family particularly enjoyed having a sunny and warm destination for winter visits. In Sarasota, they were affiliated members of Christ Church of Longboat Key. Mary was on her condo board, the Lido Key Neighbor Association, and the Sarasota/Manatee Chapter of the Wisconsin Alumni Association. Even in Florida they found a way to have Wisconsin beer and brats on the beach.
Mary is survived by her loving husband Hugh; son Dr. Mark H. Moss (Colleen) of Madison; daughter Linda Kwiatkowski of Madison; daughter Amy McKenna (Steven) of Woodbury, MN; and eight dearly loved grandchildren: Hannah and Jane Kwiatkowski; Danielle, Brianne, and Matthew McKenna; and Soren, Hazel, and Mabel Moss. She is also survived by her sister Judith (Allen) Frazier; brother John J. Tschudy Jr. (Carol), and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and son-in-law Jeffrey Kwiatkowski.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 17th at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4100 Nakoma Rd, Madison at 11:00 a.m., followed by a light luncheon. The family will greet friends at a visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, June 16th at Cress Funeral Home, 6021 University Avenue, Madison, and again at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mary's name to Westminster Presbyterian Church or Edgewood College, Madison WI.
