Madison - Merlyn H. Sachtjen, age 84, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Middleton Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Madison on December 9, 1926 the son of Merlyn F. and Berdella (Muehlenbruch) Sachtjen. Merlyn was raised in Madison, graduating from East High School, Class of 1946. He served with the U.S. Army from 1945 - 1946. Merlyn met his wife, Edith, at Zion Lutheran Church, and they were married on March 31, 1951. He became a plumber, and was a member of Madison Union 167 for over 60 years, retiring in 1989. Merlyn was a Mason for over 60 years with membership in Hiram Lodge and Zor Shriner's Director's Staff. He was also a long time member of Luther Memorial Church, as well as Midvale Community Lutheran Church. Merlyn and Edith enjoyed their travels together and with the Shriners, and their time with their granddaughters. Merlyn enjoyed his last 4 years in activities with his friends and ""family"" at Middleton Village Nursing Home, and would like to especially thank the staff there for their compassionate care and the HospiceCare team. Merlyn is survived by his son, Steve (girlfriend, Debbie Schutte) Sachtjen; his granddaughters, Jennifer (Dustin) VansCoy and Alicia (Josh) Sachtjen; his brothers, Richard (Dodi) Sachtjen and Raymond Sachtjen; and his sister, Shirley (Joe) Thomas; and his brother-in-law, Roland (Norma) Dibbert. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith; sister, Mary Erickson; and brother, Elwood Sachtjen. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 4, 2011 at MIDVALE COMMUNITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4329 Tokay Blvd., Madison, with Rev. Bruce Loewenhagen officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at church. Entombment will be held in the Roselawn Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital, or Midvale Community Lutheran Church.
