Michael John Esch, 72, died unexpectedly at home on Thursday, September 15, 2022. Mike grew up in Mineral Point; the only son of Gertrude (nee Palzkil) and Victor Esch. Mike is a UW-Platteville graduate. He spent his entire career teaching art to elementary students in the Platteville School District. Mike, while still teaching, moved to Madison to establish a home with his partner Jim Larson. Mike enjoyed his daily commutes for three primary reasons: (1) He was able to listen to news programs mornings and afternoons. (2) He loved teaching and providing his students with an outstanding art program. Neither weather nor distance would prevent him from attaining that commitment. (3) And, the miles that added up were a justification for buying a new car every year.
Mike and Jim were together for more than four decades. In addition to Jim, Joshua Larson (Dawn) and Jason Larson, Mike is survived by his sister Mary (Joe) Harker, Amy (niece) & Jeff Wolman, Michelle Harker (niece) and grandnephews: Justin, Jarrett, and Aaron Wolman.
It didn’t matter the reason for a gathering, Mike was often at the center and major source of the talking and laughter that drew your attention. You may think it ironic that Mike requested not to have a memorial gathering or service until you remember the quiet Mike. The man who regularly conducted random acts of kindness, was readily available to lend a hand, and spent hours giving emotional support to one in need of comfort or understanding. Please consider doing a similar selfless act as your gift to Mike and his loved ones.
