Milton "Milt" E. Hyland

Milton Edward Hyland, known affectionately as Milt, passed away on September 8, 2024, in Madison, Wisconsin, at the age of 77. Born on July 10, 1947, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Milt spent 76 years in Minnesota, the state he always considered home.

Milt proudly served in the Army from 1968 to 1972, with postings at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and Vicenza, Italy. His military service was a testament to his dedication and love for his country. Following his service, Milt embarked on a successful career as a land surveyor. He owned and operated Hy-Land Surveying in Osseo, MN for 30 years, where he was known for his innate ability to determine direction, earning him the nickname of a human compass with his Wife and Daughter.

Milt's life was marked by a zest for adventure and a hearty laugh. He was a man constantly on the move, with a particular fondness for the casinos of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Alongside his beloved wife Ruthanne, who preceded him in death, he enjoyed winter trips to Gulf Shores, Alabama, making stops in New Orleans, Biloxi, Mobile, and always ensuring a visit to Buc-ee's. Milt's jovial spirit earned him the loving title of Uncle Moe among his many nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Hyland) Messner; sisters Nancy (Hyland) Champagne, Mary (Hyland) Stenger; sisters-in-law Sue (Berard) Suedbeck, Bev (Meyer) Berard; brothers-in-law John Suedbeck, Tom Berard, Greg Champagne, John Stenger; and numerous nieces and nephews. Alongside Ruthanne, Milt was preceded in death by his son-in-law Kevin Messner, his parents Edward and Evelyn (Markuson) Hyland, and his in-laws Lloyd Jerald Berard and Patricia (Doyle) Berard.

A celebration of Milt's life will be held from 2pm to 5pm on Friday, September 20th, at Coventry Village, 7707 N. Brookline Drive, Madison, WI, in the Pub.
