Madison--Nancy Jane Crabb Bach, age 88, passed away peacefully in her home on December 18, 2016. A proud resident of Madison, Nancy was born February 4, 1928 to Robert Lloyd and Elsie Betts Crabb. From her mother she inherited a love of books and reading and from her father a keen enjoyment of argument.
Nancy married John Lee Bach in 1947. During their 56 years together they owned and operated Bach's Grocery on Monroe Street and later Alt n' Bach's Town Tap. Nancy taught for 25 years in the Madison Metropolitan School District, eventually earning credentials to become a school librarian. In 2006 Nancy married Jack Padgham, a fellow alumnus of the West High Class of 1945.
Nancy and John raised seven children in their home on Capital Avenue. Their family life was marked with camping adventures, family meals and evenings with close family and friends. Throughout her life, Nancy was the thread that ran through the family.
In retirement she embraced a love of travel, traveling in an RV from Florida to Alaska and taking trips to Europe and South America. However, her favorite destination was Washington Island, where her mother was born and where her entire family spent many happy summer days on Schoolhouse Beach.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Jack Padgham as well as by her seven children: Carl (Eileen) Bach; Betsy (Bob) Weber; Bill (Kathy) Bach; Nancylee Bach; Toby (Mary Ellen Harlan); Andy Bach and Tom Bach. She is greatly missed by her 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and a large extended family of stepdaughters, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Bach, and by her parents, one sister and three brothers.
A memorial service will be held at the GLENWOOD MORAVIAN CHURCH, 725 Gilmore Street in Madison on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church.
