Nancy E. Horne, 87, of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, in Madison, Wisconsin. She was born in Madison on July 11, 1936 to Virginia (Hoebel) and Dr. John Howell Gieselman.
She married William T. Horne on Dec. 24, 1965. They enjoyed 46 wonderful years together, until his death in 2011. Most of her married years were spent in Illinois. When she was in her 30’s, Nancy went back to school to become an R.N. She loved being a nurse and worked in many areas of the field, including a hospital maternity ward, the emergency room, and a doctor’s office. Nancy worked as a nurse until she was 80.
Nancy was a third generation member of the PEO Sisterhood, a philanthropic organization whose mission is promoting educational opportunities for women.
Nancy and William moved back to Madison, Wisconsin in 1994, where Nancy continued to work and had many close friends.
Nancy adored her pets through the years, including 2 Boston Terriers and 4 Siamese cats.
Nancy is survived by her daughter Beverly Horne, her step daughter Barbara (Michael) Fiandt, her step son Robert (Susan) Horne, the 4 children of Barbara and Robert, a beloved cousin Martha Lemanski and her biological son Doyle Thompson.
Nancy is preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a brother Richard Gieselman.
The family wishes to thank the nurses, doctors and the palliative team at UnityPoint Meriter Hospital who provided wonderful, compassionate care during the last days of Nancy’s life.
A memorial will be planned at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, in Crystal Lake, Illinois, at a day in the future.
