Nancy Kent Mullen

Surrounded by her family, Nancy Kent (Ameden) Mullen of Sun Prairie, WI entered eternity in peace and joy on 1 May 2010, after an eight-year battle with multiple myeloma cancer, just after 10:00 in the evening.

She was born on 12 February 1945 in Norwalk, CT, the daughter of Alden Alvin Ameden and Grace Wolcott Boyd. Nancy was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Madison, where she served in the choir, counting committee, stewardship committee, gardening committee and finance committee.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, John Andrew Mullen, her two married sons, David Alden (Kathryn Jane Joachim) Mullen and Brian John (Amanda Kirsten Wilbur) Mullen, both of Madison, five grandchildren, her two sisters, Margaret (Peg) L. Townsend of Charlestown, RI, and Paula G. Bundock of New Lexington, OH, and her brother, Roger W. Ameden of Trumbull, CT.

Nancy earned an M.A. in Business and Economics from Appalachian State University in 1977 and a B.S. in Mathematics from Michigan State University in 1967. She was a licensed CPA in WI and NC and worked as a management consultant for 25 years for Accenture, specializing in database technology and data warehousing. She co-authored Netcentric and Client/Server Computing: A Practical Guide, as well as numerous professional articles and papers.

After retirement, her primary focus became gardening, genealogy, and grandchildren. She was an attentive and adored grandmother to Liam (William), Brigid, Natalie, Reese, and Kent Mullen.

She was active in the DAR and as a genealogist. She authored or co-authored two books on genealogy, Town of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, Town Minutes 1847-1870, and Descendants of Jacob Amidown (1720-1790) of Woodstock, Connecticut, and Dudley, Massachusetts. She has served the DAR and CAR in many roles, including chapter and state offices and state and national committee service. The most recent of her numerous DAR awards and honors is the NSDAR Conservation Award for turning a one-acre yard from an alfalfa field into a series of seven garden rooms.

Special gratitude is extended to Dr. Walter Longo for his special care of Nancy over the past seven years. The entire staff at UW Hospital has been terrific.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday May 4 at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday May 5 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1833 Regent St., Madison, with the Rev. Andy B. Jones officiating.
