Verona - Nancy Joy Schunk, beloved wife, mother, grandma and friend, died Wednesday morning, October 19, 2011, in her home surrounded by her devoted husband and children as was her wish.
She was born in Milwaukee to Lorraine B. Kelpin on April 27, 1934, and grew up near the shores of Lake Michigan, often under the care and shelter of her dear Grandpa George and Grandma Martha and Uncle Howard Horneman.
She graduated Bay View High School in 1952, and Evangelical Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, Milwaukee, in 1955. She worked at Wood Veterans' Administration Hospital in Milwaukee as a Registered Nurse where she met her future husband while caring for him as a polio patient. She later worked at the Wisconsin Neurological Foundation in Madison.
On December 22, 1956, she was united in marriage to John Schunk, her beloved of 55 years, who survives her. Nancy and her family made Cross Plains, WI home from 1960 to 1971. After John became employed at the Bank of Verona in 1970, she created their cherished home in the woods near Verona where they spent their next 41 years.
Nancy is also survived by her daughter Sally Ann (Jim) Meier of Waunakee, and their daughters Kate of Albuquerque, NM, and Emily of Madison, WI; a son Steven Rolland (Kim Johnson) and their sons Rolland and Daniel of Cross Plains, WI.
She is further survived by her Uncle Marvin Miller and Cousin Lynn Miller of Milwaukee. She was preceded in death by her Mother Lorraine and Brother Thomas Kelpin.
As per Nancy's wishes a private family gathering will be held to reflect on her life at a later date.
The family extends a warm and heart felt thank you to all the Agrace HospiceCare staff who made it possible for Nancy to remain at home.
In lieu of flowers the family welcomes memorials to Agrace HospiceCare, Inc., Olbrich Gardens, or a charity of your choice.
