Madison - Nancy Jean Stapay, age 75, passed away peacefully with family present on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg, Wis.
Nancy J. Stapay was born Nancy Jean Aggen in Morrison, Illinois to Peter and Olive Church Aggen. She grew up on a farm and enjoyed school. She played the piano, was an accomplished seamstress, and was an active member of 4-H. Nancy won several academic awards and graduated from Morrison High School as Valedictorian in 1954. She continued her studies at Cornell College where she loved her classes and the life-long friends she made. Nancy met her future husband, Daniel R. Stapay, at Cornell.
Nancy graduated from Cornell College in 1958 and went on to teach math at St. Katherine's School in Davenport, Iowa, a preparatory school for girls. Nancy and Dan were married on August 14, 1960 at the First Presbyterian Church in Morrison, Illinois. They honeymooned at a friend's cabin on Kabekona Lake in northern Minnesota, and so began over 50 years of enjoyable family summer trips to the Minnesota lake country.
Nancy and Dan lived and worked in East Alton, Ill., Robbinsdale, Minn., Clinton, Iowa and Des Moines, Iowa before settling in Madison, Wisconsin where they have lived for the last 36 years.
Nancy was a warm, kind, giving person. She loved working with children and used her teaching skills as the Christian Education Coordinator at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Madison. She later served as a Deacon for Covenant and Administrative Deacon from 2002-2009.
Nancy enjoyed music, reading, travel, gardening and watercolors. She was also an active member of P.E.O.
Nancy is survived by her husband Daniel R. Stapay; children, Peter D. Stapay of Breckenridge, Colo and Rebecca S. Potter, son-in-law Trevor G. Potter and grandson Quinten Q. Potter all of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; several nieces and nephews and a wide circle of friends. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; sister O. June Houseman; and brother Jim Aggen.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 326 S. Segoe Rd., Madison, WI 53705. Reverend Emeritus William King and Reverend Dr. Deborah Lind-Schmitz will perform the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, Attn: Mary Kieta.
Nancy's family would like to thank the wonderful nurses, Kristin and Emily in the TLC unit at UW Hospital for their kindness, Dr. Runo for his expertise, Dr. Walsh for her guidance, and Dr. Mary Thompson for her personal attention. Thanks also to the staff at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Nancy will be missed by many.
