Neil Miller Macaulay, age 87, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away at the Sage Meadow Assisted Living in Middleton on Sunday, September 5th,2021. He passed peacefully to join his Lord and Savior in heaven. Neil was born in Madison, WI, September 25th, 1933, to parents John and Norma (Miller) Macaulay. He graduated from East High School in 1952 and served along with his wife on the Madison East Reunion Committee for 40 years.
He joined the Marines right out of high school and then hitched hiked back from California to marry the love of his life Shirley (Campbell) Macaulay in January of 1954 and had six children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley, son Kent, sister Nancy Gall, brothers-in-law William Malloy, James Brandt, Marvin Kittle, Conrad Curtin, Donald Fishler and sister-in-law Jean Curtin. He is survived by his children, Kathy Courtney, Karen (Clement) LaMere, Kevin (Terry) Macaulay, Kean Macaulay, and Kraig Macaulay, sisters Barbara Malloy, Deanna Brandt, Sharon Kittle, sister-in-law Margaret (Ed) Kusinski and brother-in-law Thomas Gall. He is further survived by nine grandchildren, Kelly (Brian) Wallace, Christina (Nate) Gordon, Jon (Heather) Macaulay, Allen (Leslie) Macaulay, Matt (special friend Brianna) Macaulay, Jennifer (Scott) Garske, Alyssa (Nick) von Allmen, Katelyn (Ahna) Barreau, Daniel (fiance Samantha) Macaulay, and 15 great grandchildren.
Neil was proud of his military career, serving in the US Marine Corp from 1953-1957 during the Korean War Conflict. He then served with the Wisconsin Air National Guard for 19 years, retiring as Senior Enlisted Advisor for Wisconsin.
He worked at numerous companies including Gisholt Machine Co., the US Post Office and the City of Madison before completing 34 years with Oscar Mayer and 2 years with the State of Wisconsin before retiring.
He was involved in the Scouting programs with his four boys and held leadership roles for 27 years.
He was a member of the American Legion since 1960 and held numerous offices including Adjutant, Vice Commander and Post Commander. He also served as the Post Athletic Director for over 30 years. He served on the American Legion State Bowling Association as President and Director for over 30 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Waunakee, and life member and 4 term President of Chapter 5, NCO Academy Graduate Association. He was a life member of the National Chapter, serving as Vice President for one term and President for two terms.
He served as a volunteer for the Waunakee Food Fair as well.
He had a great love for playing cards, especially euchre and Texas hold-em. Many holidays were spent around the card table.
He so loved his kids, grandkids and great grand-kids and his eyes lit up when talking about them. His most recent great grandson, born at the end of August was named after his great grandpa.
Funeral services will be held on Monday Sept 13, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St John’s Catholic Church, 209 South St Waunakee. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will take place in the church cemetery with full Military Honors.
