Newell Smith, age 93, died Friday, August 5 peacefully surrounded by his family at HospiceCare in Fitchburg.
Newell was born April 1, 1918 in Galesville, WI to Howard and Anna Louise (Anderson) Smith. His wife of 50 years, Dorothy, and his brother Darrell preceded him in death.
Entering the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1936, he earned early recognition for his effectiveness as a student worker in the University Residence Halls. He joined the university staff in 1941 after receiving a bachelor's degree in Economics and then served continuously - with the exception of military service in WWII - as Director of University Housing for 28 years until his retirement in 1983. Newell developed a national reputation as an excellent administrator and advocate for students. Universities throughout the United States and Canada frequently consulted him. His leadership was characterized by a sound faith in students and a firm belief that quality housing opportunities contribute significantly to a college education. In August 2006, Newell J. Smith Residence Hall on the UW-Madison campus, was named in his honor.
Following his career at the university, Newell enjoyed many happy years golfing in Jekyll Island ,GA and Madison, canoeing the rivers of Ontario and Northern Wisconsin, tying flies for fishing, wood carving, playing tennis and skiing the Arboretum trails.
In his 80s, Newell's love of travel led him to Australia on a hiking tour and to China, where he climbed the Great Wall. He lived a life filled with professional accomplishments, a devoted family and a strong relationship with nature.
He is survived by three children: Phil Smith (Holly) of Stevens Point, Ellen Smith (Rick Whaley) of Milwaukee, and Nancy Dowell (David) of Portland, OR as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Ilene Hagman and her family, and many other close friends who will all miss him dearly.
The family would like to thank HospiceCare for the excellent care provided, Capitol Lakes for eight years of enriched living, Dr. Buyan-Dent in the UW-Madison Movement Clinic, and Dr. Hyzer and Meriter Hospital for twenty years of continued care.
