Norbert Haas

The buzzer sounded and the coach walked off the court one last time, into the loving arms of his wife, Jean, and his Savior.

Norb Haas, affectionately known as "Coach-N," died April 10 of COVID complications at the age of 91. He will be missed. He was born in Madison on June 12, 1931, to Irene and Norbert Haas. He attended St. James Grade School and spent his Freshman year of high school at Madison West. The family then moved to West Allis where he spent his sophomore year at Nathan Hale, then back to Madison where he finished and graduated from Madison Edgewood High School. It was there that he met and fell in love with Jean Lang. After negotiating with her father, Jean and Norb were married on January 20, 1951. Together they raised four children, Lee, Lynn, Larry, and Lisa, in the light of their faith.

Norb worked for 48 years for the University of Wisconsin Physical Plant as a plumber. He was also instrumental in starting the athletic program at Our Lady Queen of Peace grade school where he volunteered his time coaching for more than 30 years, hence the moniker Coach-N. In his spare time, he loved to go camping with his family and play golf with his buddies… a lot of golf. He also played fast-pitch softball in Madison and was considered one of the better catchers in the city.

After retirement, he spent his days relaxing, playing golf (of course) and building golf clubs in his garage workshop. He lost his wife, Jean, to cancer in 2004.

He leaves behind his children, Lee (Kitty), Lynn (Larry) Morris, Larry (Cindy), and Lisa (Ian) Perrin, eight grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the All-Saints Community and Oak Park Place-Nakoma, for giving dad a welcoming and safe haven to spend his last years. Thanks Mom & Dad for everything. They are together again.

There will be a visitation for Norb on Monday, April 17 at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 401 s. Owen Dr., from 9:30-11 am.   Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 am.  Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady Queen of Peace School Endowment Fund or Edgewood High School.
