Norma Brooks

October 29, 1927 — July 6, 2021

Norma Aileen Brooks, age 93, passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Born on October 29, 1927 in northern Illinois, she was the first child of Bessie (Woodbury) and Martin Sassen. She had one brother, Duane. She married Lynndon A. Brooks on August 5, 1950 at the Osco Community Church in Osco, Illinois.

She graduated from Orion Community High School (Illinois) and University of Wisconsin-Madison with a major in Home Economics (now Human Ecology). She taught junior and senior high school and at Madison Area Technical College.

She was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Madison since 1950. She was active in and President of University League and Daughters of Demeter at the UW-Madison. She was also active in the Bascom Hill Society.  She was President of Republican Women of Dane County and active in the Wisconsin Federation of Republican Women. Recently, she participated in PEO Chapter BY.

Norma enjoyed travelling. She and Lynn had many memorable family vacations when their children were young and continued regular travelling after Lynn retired. Vacations included Europe, Russia, China, Egypt, Turkey, Australia and Africa. In addition to family activities, she enjoyed needlework, reading, sewing, cooking and playing bridge. Her later years were spent at Oakwood Village where she enjoyed the many activities.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lynndon on December 27, 2002, and brother Duane. Survivors include son Gregory (Jeannette), daughter Carol (John) Coppin, grandchildren Kristin, Eric (Bridget), and Anna (Beau) Peterson, great grandchildren Adelaide, Matilda, Arden, Anselm, Cyprian and one about to arrive, and many nieces and nephews. She was a thoughtful, loving and caring person who will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2021 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, with a funeral service at 10:30 am. Memorials can be sent Bethel Lutheran Church-Media Ministry, Norma A. Brooks Scholarship (University of Wisconsin Foundation), or Oakwood Foundation.
