Korger, Paul D. "Grandpa"
Madison: In the early morning hours of Monday, May 2, 2016, Paul Korger, age 70, died in his sleep. Preferring to be called "Grandpa", Paul had just enjoyed his favorite type of weekend--- a soccer weekend. "His team," Magic U-14 Girls' Team, had a well-played tournament. Grace, his older granddaughter, had scored four goals. To make this great weekend even better, he talked with his younger granddaughter, Faith, in Illinois, who had four saves in goal, along with one goal while playing forward. For Grandpa Paul, this weekend could not have been better.
A man of many hobbies, soccer was his favorite. He knew little of the sport when he started coaching Christopher's kindergarten team in 1977. From that beginning, his interest in and love of soccer only grew when Katie began playing. His contributions to the sport include: starting the first girls' soccer league in Madison and serving as president of the Madison 56ers Soccer Club for a number of years. Paul was honored by the Madison Area Soccer Hall of Fame. Soccer was how Paul showed pride in the community and the kids he loved.
Paul was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on October 5, 1945 to Tony and Esther (Dehnke) Korger. He graduated from Regis High School in 1963 and earned a degree in Chemistry from UW Eau Claire in 1968. His lifetime job was with the State of Wisconsin, Department of Agriculture's General Labs Division. He retired on June 1, 2012. Finally, he was free to be a full-time grandpa!
On January 27, 1968, Paul married Pat Moore Korger at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Eau Claire. He is survived by Pat, their children: Christopher, his wife, Tracy, and their daughter, Faith, of Dunlap, Illinois; and Katie, Jeffrey, and their daughter Grace. Paul was also proud to be known as Grandpa Paul to Junior, Star, JavJav, LaSherry, and Christina, as well as Aditva and Arun, all the neighborhood kids, and the U-14 Magic Girls' Soccer Team.
Paul is further survived by his brother, Charles Korger, his brother-in-law, Mike and Deb Moore; Connie Korger, Godchildren: Blane Neher, Kelly Korger Lieser, Megan Moore, and Elizabeth Metzger Denny. Uncles Richard and Herman Dehnke, along with many nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Esther Korger, and his parents-in-law, Al and Pat Moore.
A Memorial Service Celebrating Paul's Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 602 Everglade Ave., Madison, WI with Fr. Bart Timmerman presiding.
Any donations will be used to set up a soccer remembrance in honor of Paul. Many thanks to Dr. Nancy Fuller for her kind and patient care. The family also appreciates the help of Jeff Olson of Cress Funeral & Cremation Service on University Ave. Please share your memories of "Grandpa" Paul.
