Peter “Pete” Breunig

Peter “Pete” Ewald Breunig, 86, of Waunakee, passed peacefully the morning of June 14, 2024. He was born May 17, 1938 to Ewald and Bernita(Bonnie Neumaier) Breunig of Roxbury, WI. He attended grade school at St. Norbert’s in Roxbury and graduated from Sauk City High School in 1957. On June 28, 1960, Pete married Dorothy Agnes Kaltenberg of Waunakee, WI.

Pete is survived by his three children, David (Elizabeth) Gerard of Eau Claire, Jeffrey (Kimberly) Breunig of Madison, and Jem (Colleen Cunningham) Daley of Black Earth; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren, four step great-grandchildren; siblings Paul(Shirley), Michael, Mary (Peter Casey) Breunig, Martha Brunner, Ruth(Phil) Filz, and Pat(Agnes); sisters-in-law Helen Kaltenberg, Lucy Kaltenberg, and Kathleen Kaltenberg; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his wife and parents, Pete was preceded in death by one infant son and two infant daughters; infant sister Joan; father and mother-in-law Jacob and Lena Kaltenberg.

Pete was co-owner of Comstock Seed and Feed in Waunakee for 29 years during which time he and Dorothy traveled for business trips with highlights going to Hawaii twice and Spain. After they sold the Mill, Pete worked 14 years in the Waunakee school district as a custodian at the intermediate and high school before becoming the head custodian at Heritage Elementary. Before retiring fully, he worked part time for 4 years at Heritage where one of his favorite duties was to deliver milk to the classrooms for the kid’s milk break.

Pete and Dorothy loved to dance and listen to polka music. They enjoyed playing cards with friends and spending time at their cottage together. Later in life, Pete enjoyed watching the Packers, Brewers, Badgers and Waunakee prep football, as well as Mollie B and Danny O’Donnell. If you happened to visit Pete on a Saturday morning, you could be sure that you would end up watching an antique tractor auction on RFD-TV with him!

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Waunakee. Visitation at 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. with Mass following. Livestream available at stjb.org. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.

The family would like to thank and show appreciation to the staff of Home Again in Waunakee, especially to Donna and Bobbie, and to Agrace, most notably to Kendra, for all the special care and comfort they provided for our dad.
