Philip Quigley Sawin was born in Wilmington, DE., November 8, 1908. Â His parents were Ellen Barrett Quigley Sawin and Sanford Wales Sawin. Â He grew up in Delaware and spent his early years there. Â Phil attended Tower Hill Preparatory School and then graduated from Syracuse University in 1930. Â After college, Phil married Dorothy May McKee ""Dottie"" in 1932 and they returned to Delaware. Â They spent 65 wonderful years together. Â Phil played a leadership role in the development of Sunny Hills and Sanford Schools in Hockessin Delaware. Â In 1942 he enlisted in the Navy where he served in a PT boat squadron in the South Pacific. Â In 1951, he moved to Wisconsin with his family to earn a PhD in Education at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He was an avid boatman, owning the Russell Marina in Westport, WI, racing ice boats and sailing ""E"" scows. Â In retirement, he built a home on Man O' War Cay in the Bahamas where he spent winters with his wife, Dottie, children and grandchildren. Phil was preceded in death by his wife, Dottie, his parents, a brother and two sisters. Â He is survived by five children, Philip Jr. (Judith), of Menomonie, WI, Delores ""Lorie"" Eleanor MacLeish (Donald) of Waunakee, WI, Stephen Sanford (Karen) of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Douglas Bruce of Laguna Hills CA and New Braunfels, TX, and Ellen Barrett Quigley Sawin Gilman, (Stephen) of Readfield, ME. He is further survived by 17 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren as well as a sister, Marian Langerak and a brother, William Sanford Sawin, both of Delaware. Â Arrangements are pending with a private burial to take place at a future date.
